Dialoguing Youth Event: Panel Diskussion

„Living, learning, working together“

Young people from 24 countries will discuss chances and obstacles of cross-border cooperation with representatives from the arts, the economy, sports and politics.

Already in 1967 Stanley Milgram argued that the world may be smaller than we usually assume. According to the small world phenomenon, all human beings in the world are connected by a surprisingly short chain of personal acquaintances. Suspected to be a very unlikely phenomenon in 1967, global networking has become a casual thing in 2008.

The word ‘globalization’ has long turned from an abstract economic term into a very real experience. We fly cheaply, communicate virtually und view televised programmes. Our life, our education and our work are characterised by interculturalism. Is that an enrichment? A benefit? Or is it just one huge hotbed of conflict?

How do young and grown up people enter into intercultural dialogue with others in their daily lives and in their jobs? When is cultural diversity grasped as a resource and when as a problem? How can ephemeral euphoria be transformed into mutual respect and long-term cooperation?

In the context of such problems, young creative thinkers, artists and sportspeople will discuss their own experiences with cross-border cooperation. They will share with us their enthusiasm and their interest in each other. They will tell us how they deal with the ‘other’ in their daily lives and their jobs, and how interculturalism has made them redraw geographical, social and personal borders.

Coming together is a beginning;
keeping together is progress;
working together is success.
Henry Ford
