1. Title of project // Projekttitel:

Crossing east-west-north-south cultural borders – observing different attitudes to art in a diverse Europe.

Cultural borders and boundaries in public space. Everywhere we move in public space, we meet expressions of culture: City planning, architecture, sounds, smells, dress code, behaviour, language etc. often without thinking consciously about it, we conform to these expressiones, take for granted the boundaries they create and move within them. The idea of this project is to make the students aware of these cultural boundaries in public space by, first, explaining to the students what different concepts of culture and interculture entail and then letting them explore the boundaries in different spheres of public space in their own country and communicating their thoughts about them.

5. Idea of the project / project description / runtime // Entstehung der Projektidee / Projektbeschreibung / Laufzeit

Medium: podcast. The idea is to make tree radioprograms (to be uploaded on the Querdenken-wiki) and take pictures of the objects that are placed in a public space.

1.February (in the second week) 1 Presentation: Students at each school present themselves. Subjects: The School, The Students, National Marks (capital, sights, inhabitants), National Modern Literature and Art (The students interview interesting people from their own country about this topic).

2.March (in the second week)Performance: An object that is not typical in the school will be shown. Interactive interview: The students interviewing one another. Mario Cassar will come up with the object and some questions that we all should answer. The interviews (on forum) will be made for a radio-program and uploaded on the Wiki

3. April (in the second week)
The Product: Each school tries to make contact with an artist. The artist comes up with an idea of a non-typical object in a common place. The students will produce a reportage and interviews about the cultural borders they discover. First of all the student should be aware of the different reactions they discover, but also ask people about what they think are the artist ideas about the performance.

Pictures will also be taken.

The teacher produces 3 questions about his own culture and sends them around to the others: Then, the students are meant to create inter-cultural communication by crossing these boundaries in creative expression without language (as language itself is one of the boundaries of public space). These crossings must be recorded and then connected into an easily accessible wordless website, which should illustrate how inter-national cooperation can cross cultural boundaries and create inter-cultural communication through creative expression.

7. Detailed project-schedule and method (who, what, when, how?) // detailierter Zeitplan und Methode der Umsetzung (wer, was, wann, wie?):

OVERALL PROJECT SCHEDULE Cooperation before rendez-vous week: Exploring cultural boundaries in public space in each of the two countries under the following headlines: - Boundaries in language – national culture and literature/media - Individual boundaries – Expressions of culture in looks and demeanor - Boundaries in the city – communicating borders without words in public space - Boundaries between national states – travelling between eg. Denmark and Sweden and examining how national boundaries are expressed in public space.

Each of the participating groups should simultaneously explore these 4 aspects of cultural boundaries in public space and document their explorations through photographs and discussions, which are then swapped with the other group and discussed inter-nationally via for example podcast, blog and chat. That provides the groups with background knowledge on the subject and on each other for the mini-projects and the wordless website.
