5. Idea of the project / project description / runtime // Entstehung der Projektidee / Projektbeschreibung / Laufzeit

Cultural borders and boundaries in public space- Everywhere we move in public space, we meet expressions of culture: City planning, architecture, sounds, smells, dress code, behaviour, language etc. often without thinking consciously about it, we conform to these expressiones, take for granted the boundaries they create and move within them. The idea of this project is to make the students aware of these cultural boundaries in public space by, first, explaining to the students what different concepts of culture and interculture entail and then letting them explore the boundaries in different spheres of public space in their own country and communicating their thoughts about them.

6. Aims of the project // Projektziele

Medium: podcast. The idea is to make tree radioprograms (upload on the Querdenken-wiki) and take pictures of the objects that are placed in a public space.

1. February (second week)
Presentation: Each school presents itself Subjects: The School, The students, National marks (capital, sights, inhabitans), National modern litteratur and art (The studenst interview interesting people from there own country about this topic).

'2. March (second week)
'
Performance:
An object that is not typical in the school is placed in the building's entrance or foyer

Interactiv interview: The students interview one another.

It was decided that a camping be put in the school and the following details and questions are asked:

1. Name and age of student

2. What do you think this object is?

3. What material/s do you think it's made of?

4. From what side would you prefer to see this object?

5. Do agree that this object be permanently exhibited in the school grounds? Reasons for the answer.

The interviews (on forum) is made for a radio-program and upload on the Wiki

3. April (second week)<br> The Product: Each school contacts an artist. The artist comes up with an idea, which should be manifested as a non-typical object to be put in a common place, such as the town's main square. The students will produce a raportage and interviews about the cultural borders they discover. First of all the students should be aware of the different reactions they discover, but also ask people about what they think about the artist's idea regarding the object exhibited.

Picture of the happening are uploaded on wiki>

The teacher produces 3 questions about the culture in his own country and send them around to the other partners:

Then, the students are meant to create inter-cultural communication by crossing these boundaries in creative expression without language (as language itself is one of the boundaries of public space). These crossings must be recorded and then connected into an easily accessible wordless website, which should illustrate how inter-national cooperation can cross cultural boundaries and create inter-cultural communication through creative expression.

7. Detailed project-schedule and method (who, what, when, how?)

OVERALL PROJECT SCHEDULE

Cooperation before rendez-vous week:
Exploring cultural boundaries in public space in each of the two countries under the following headlines:
- Boundaries in language – national culture and literature/media - Individual boundaries – Expressions of culture in looks and demeanor - Boundaries in the city – communicating borders without words in public space - Boundaries between national states – travelling between eg. Denmark and Sweden and examining how national boundaries are expressed in public space.

Each of the participating groups should simultaneously explore these 4 aspects of cultural boundaries in public space and document their explorations through photographs and discussions, which are then swapped with the other group and discussed internationally via for example podcast, blog and chat. That provides the groups with background knowledge on the subject and on each other for the mini-projects and the wordless website.

Malta's second report

AN OUTLINE OF THE PROJECT IN THE MALTESE LANGUAGE:

Kullimkien niltaqghu ma' fruntieri kulturali hekk kif nimirhu fi spazji pubblici. Dan isehh f'kull hin madwarna u barra mill-ambjent taghna, barra l-pajjiz. F'din l-esperjenza komuni, inkunu kontinwament qeghdin niltaqghu ma' espressjonijiet kulturali differenti. Hekk per ezempju l-ippjanar urban, l-arkitettura, l-hsejjes u l-irwejjah, modi ta' lbies, l-imgieba tal-persuni u fl-ahhar imma mhux l-anqas, il-lingwa.

Hemm ir-riskju kbir li dawn l-esperjenzi ta' kuljum nehduhom for granted u ma nahsbux konxjament dwarhom. Hekk nistghu facilment nikkonformaw u fl-istess hin nitilfu s-sabih ta' l-esperjenza interkulturali. Ghan ewlieni, f'dan il-progett hu li naghmlu lill-istudenti konxji minn dawn il-fruntieri kulturali billi:

1. naghtuhom spjegazzjoni dwar xhini l-kultura u l-interkultura

2. naghtuhom il-possibilita' li jesploraw dawn il-fruntieri fl-ambitu ta' spazji pubblici go Malta u fl-istess hin nikkomunikaw ma' ohrajn barra minn pajjizna biex hekk issir forma ta' esperjenza inter-kulturali.

Tpogga kamp fl-entrata ta' l-iskola u l-istudenti gabru r-reazzjonijiet ghal dan l-oggett stramb u mhux is-soltu ssibu f'post simili. Dawn l-intervisti gew irrekordjati u mitfugha fil-website WIKI tal-progett. L-istudenti staqsew lil shabhom l-istudenti diversi mistoqsijiet bhal per ezempju, jaqblux li dan l-oggett, jigifieri l-kamp, ghandux jigi esebit fl-iskola b'mod permanenti. Il-maggoranza assoluta wiegbu fin-negattiv u dan juri kemm is-socjeta' Malta u Ghawdxija ghadha mhix familjari ma' forom aktar kuncettwali ta' arti l-aktar l-installazzjonijiet. ' QUOTES FROM THE ART ROOM, SIR M. A. REFALO CENTRE, GOZO - MALTA''''

STEPHANIE (Age 16):

"I never believed an EU project like QUERDENKEN could offer so much for our Art& Design curriculum. We moved from brainstorming, to designing and finally for realization and exhibiting of the sculpture in a public place ... a real thumbs-up to everybody who was involved"

STEPHEN (Age 17)

"I succeeded to implement my knowledge in 3-D in a happy and relaxed environment. We really worked like a team."

JOSEPH (Age 16)

"I really liked the sculpture presented by our Slovenian partners and the reactions people must have had in Slovenia. I'm very intrigued by Danish culture as encountered through our friends' podcast. Though I knew a bit about Portuguese Baroque, I was really impressed with the magnificent church interiors our Portuguese partners sent us on Wiki ... "

KENNETH (Age 16)

"In this project, I succeeded to use my experience in carnival floats' construction, here in Gozo ( in the famour Nadur Carnival) with something more contemporary and conceptual. It was a real buzz!!!!!!!

Slovene second report

An outline of the project in the Slovene language:

Quotes from the students in Maribor, Slovenia

Ana Gruden, 17

I am really happy to have met so many different people and I find fascinating how people that come from so many backgrounds, countries, etc. can work so well together as a group. So I guess the saying ˝UNITED IN DIVERSITY˝ is true. We are so different, but somewhere in the inside we are all the same.

The project was definitely a new and interesting experience, from which a learned a lot of new things about culture, art, and above all, people.

Luka Mustafa, 17

This interesting project has changed us. It has shown us some new aspects through fun and creative thinking. Come on, and go with the flow of this project.

Ta zanimiv projekt nas je zelo spremenil. Pokazal nam je nove načine razmišljanja skozi zabavo in kreativno razmišljanje. Pridite in hodite po smernicah tega projekta.

Nina Žigart, 17

In a world of diversity, conflicts and a constant battle for success it's nice to get together with people from different countries, people of different nationalities, religions, views on the world and figure out that in all the diversity we are all similar. After all, we ARE all just human beings.
